PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent paper money jam during conveyance while enabling a user to insert and take out paper sheets without inserting his or her hand or finger in a paper sheet handling device. SOLUTION: The paper sheet handling device includes: a paper sheet slot; a pair of conveyance unit including a first conveyance section and a second conveyance section; a moving mechanism configured to move the first conveyance section and the second conveyance section in an approaching or separating direction; a detection unit for detecting conveyance related information for the paper sheets held between the pair of conveyance sections; and determination unit for determining whether the paper sheets can be conveyed or not on the basis of the conveyance related information. The moving mechanism moves, when determination unit determines that the paper sheet can be conveyed, the first conveyance section and the second conveyance section in the approaching direction to hold the paper sheet, or moves, when it is determined that the paper sheet cannot be conveyed, the first conveyance section and the second conveyance section in separating direction to release the paper sheet.
