PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method and apparatus of an optical fiber, by which an optical fiber having a hole can be manufactured in a high yield while securing a constant hole diameter over the entire length in a longitudinal direction. SOLUTION: The manufacturing method of the optical fiber including heating and melting an optical fiber preform 3 and drawing the preform into an optical fiber 4 having at least one hole along the longitudinal direction, wherein the optical fiber 4 while drawn is irradiated with illumination light from an illumination device 5 so as to detect the shadow of the hole from the illumination light transmitting through the optical fiber while drawn, and controlling the diameter of the hole from the shadow of the hole.
