PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for detecting and diagnosing colon cancer.SOLUTION: The method for detecting colon cancer cells or rectum cancer cells includes a step of determining the level of expression of TOM34 (34kDa translocase of mitchondorial outer membrane) genes present in patient-derived cell populations to discriminate colon cancer cells from normal cells. The level of expression of the genes is determined by a method selected from detection of mRNA of TOM34, detection of proteins encoded by TOM34, and detection of the biological activity of TOM34.
