PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method by which an elliptical polarizing plate having superior contrast in an oblique direction, a wide band and a wide visual field angle can be manufactured so as to have uniform optical characteristics at low cost. SOLUTION: The manufacturing method of the elliptical polarizing plate includes a first birefringence layer forming step for forming a first birefringence layer 13, having refractive index characteristics of nz>nx=ny on a protective film 12; an a second birefringence layer forming step for forming a second birefringence layer 14, having refractive index characteristics of nx>ny=nz on the first birefringence layer 13; an a third birefringence layer forming step for forming a third birefringence layer 15, having refractive index characteristics of nx>ny>nz on the second birefringence layer 14; and a polarizer layering step for layering a polarizer 11 on the surface of the protective film 12, where the first birefringence layer is not formed. The second birefringence layer is formed on the surface of a plastic film F, subjected to rubbing treatment by a rubbing roll 4 and a plurality of backup roll 51 positioned directly under the rubbing roll 4 and transferred to the first birefringence layer 13.
