PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic resistance effect element or the like which prevents the generation of electromigration at the end of an electrode film in a reed overlay structure.
SOLUTION: The thin film magnetic head 1 is provided with a read overlay type reading element 7. Such a reading element is equipped with a magnetic resistance effect film 41, electrode films 47, 49 and protection films 51, 53, 55. The electrode films are provided so as to supply a sense current to the magnetic resistance effect film. Further, the protection films comprise etching preventing protection films 51, 53 for covering the upper surface of the electrode films, and an electromigration preventing protection film 55 for covering the upper surface of the etching preventing protection films, the side surfaces 47a, 49a of the electrode films and the upper surface of the magnetic resistance effect film.
