PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a configuration for establishing a telephone communication connection through the use of a broadband network and a switching system. SOLUTION: According to the principle of the present invention, a pulse code modulation (PCM) signal flow is converted into an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) cell so as to switch and transmit it across a telephone communication network. Each cell carries one PCM data sample of different voice connections up to 48 kinds. These voice connections are selected, because they have a destination common to the PCM data flow. Although these cells are transmitted via an ATM virtual circuit, while each circuit transmits one cell every 125μs. An advantage is that the ATM transmission system is interfaced with the PCM system without causing considerable delays, and without requiring additional buffers. Another advantage is that a new voice channel can be established, using an empty slot of an existing virtual channel in most of times. The present invention can be used for a large-scale switching system that comprises smaller-scale systems which are densely interconnected, or for implementation of clusters.
