The present invention provides a practical method is provided to generate ammonia from a combustible, hydrogen-containing gas mixture which can be used as fuel for heating buildings or in a combined heat and power engine. The energy required for the ammonia-cracking is obtained primarily by the oxidation of hydrogen. The hydrogen is removed as part of the gas stream, the product gas mixture and recycled to the reactor inlet, where the required energy demand coverage amount of oxygen and the ammonia is metered. The oxidation is carried out over an oxidation catalyst, the subsequent cleavage of the ammonia at a suitable gap to catalyst. The device is operated as a circulation reactor. The recycling of the final product to the reactor inlet is provided in addition to the availability of hydrogen for a high enough temperature for safe ignition of the oxidation catalyst.
