A method (200) of tracking variable states of a gas turbine engine in transient conditions includes obtaining input data (210) representative of rotor velocity and pressure ratio; calculating a reference transient scheduled trajectory (220) based on the input data; calculating a speed reference transient scheduled trajectory based on the input data; calculating a feedforward variable (230) based on the reference transient scheduled trajectory; obtaining a feedback control variable (240); and determining a control variable (250) based on a combination of the feedforward variable and the feedback control variable.
