The invention relates to a device (14a to 14d, 30, 200, 252, 270, 350) for handling single sheets, for introducing and distributing rectangular single sheets (38) resepctively into and out of a container (12a to 12d). Said rectangular single sheets can especially be bank notes (38). The device (14a to 14d, 30, 200, 252, 270, 350) for handling single sheets has a feeding mechanism provided with feeding elements for feeding single sheets (38) sheet by sheet and for placing said single sheets (38) in a pile (36) of single sheets in the container (12a to 12d). The device for handling single sheets also comprises a separating system provided with separating elements for removing single sheets (38) arranged in the pile (36), sheet by sheet, from the container (12a to 12d). The feeding elements and the separating elements are arranged separately from the container (12a to 12d).
