An assembly (10) which may selectively form and/or cool an item, such as an automotive fuel tank (300) . Such cooling is accomplished in a highly efficient manner. Such an assembly comprises a plurality of spaced apart plates (70) which are fixed within a carrier (12) and which cooperatively define the shape of a certain item, such as an automotive fuel tank. A method of forming and/or cooling an item, such as an automotive fuel tank, comprises the steps of forming an assembly which includes a carrier having a plurality of spaced apart plates ; forming said item within said carrier by use of said plurality of said spaced apart plates; placing said item upon said spaced apart plates and placing a cooling media in contact with said assembly.
