The present invention reduces compressive stress and magnetic loss during shrink-fitting or press-fitting of a stator, and improves motor efficiency, without the need to change the shape of a stator core of the stator and without significantly enlarging a sealed housing. A hermetic electric compressor (1) in which an electric motor (5) and a compression mechanism (6) are fixedly installed within acylindrical sealed housing (2) and the compression mechanism (6) can be driven by the electric motor (5) via a drive shaft (13), wherein the electric motor (5) is installed by shrink-fitting or press-fitting so that only a partial range (h1 or h5) of the motor in the thickness direction of the stator (11) is fixed on an inner peripheral surface of the sealed housing (2), and the remaining portionof the motor is in non-contact with the housing inner peripheral surface due to expansion of the inner diameter of the sealed housing (2).
