The invention relates to a device for setting a stiffness of an adaptive energy absorbing structure. The energy absorbing structure comprises a housing (100), at least one disengagement die (104) for deforming a deformation element guided by the disengagement die in a direction of operation, and a locking element (106) that is movable in the direction of operation. The device comprises a transfer device (312) for transferring a force to the locking element in order to move the locking element in the direction of operation between a first position and at least one second position. The locking element is designed, in the first position, to brace the disengagement die in such a manner that the deformation element is deformable with a first deformation, and, in the second position, to brace same in such a manner that the deformation element is deformable with a second deformation. Moreover, the device comprises a spring element (110) which is arranged between the locking element and the housing in the direction of operation, wherein the spring element is designed to counteract the transferred force by means of a counterforce.
