The invention relates to a two-part piston (1) for an internal combustion engine, consisting of an upper part (2) and a lower part (3) that is connected to said upper part, comprising a rotating, closed cooling channel (9) that is radially external and is close to the piston base (4), said cooling channel being closed on the lower side thereof by the cooling channel covering device (10), by meansof which two shaft elements (12, 13) that are opposite to each other are respectively connected to the shaft connection (14, 15). In order to reduce the weight of the piston and thus to prevent secondary movement of the piston, rotating recesses (20) are provided in the region of the shaft elements (12, 13), and are delimited on the piston base side by the cooling channel covering device (10) andon the shaft side by the shaft connections (14, 15). The shaft connections (14, 15) on the piston base side are connected to the radially inner area of the cooling channel covering device (10) and onthe shaft side to the upper areas of the shaft elements (12, 13).
