    • The relay system of the present invention comprises a field effect device such as a MOSFET and a microprocessor that controls the on and off states of the field effect transistor. The processor monitors the current supplied to the field effect device and open circuits the device if the current exceeds a selected value. Importantly, the present invention uses a field effect device and microprocessor, as opposed to contacts, a coil and a downstream circuit breaker like conventional electromechanical relays. Unlike an electromechanical relay, the solid state relay is free of problems that arise from having mechanical parts. The solid state relay fuse is free of arcing, sparking, and there are no contact materials that can wear out or generate noise. Because of the use of a microprocessor, the solid state relay has a faster switching speed, and there are no switching voltage spikes from turning on a coil.

    • An apparatus and methods are provided for data communications associated with a heavy duty vehicle. The apparatus preferably includes at least one electronic subsystem associated with the heavy duty vehicle and a plurality of electrical conductors connected to the at least one electronic subsystem and associated with the heavy duty vehicle. A vehicle data communications protocol converter is preferably connected to the plurality of electrical conductors for converting a first data communications protocol associated with data communications along the plurality of electrical conductors to a second data communications protocol such as an infrared or an RF data communications protocol. The apparatus also preferably includes a transceiver connected to the data communications protocol converter for transmitting the second data communications protocol from the heavy duty vehicle and receiving the data communications protocol from a remote data communications terminal.

    • The present invention provides systems and structures for reducing corrosion in connectors. The present invention employs channels in either the cavity of the connector or the body of the terminal. The channels are configured to receive a corrosive resistant material. When the connector and terminal are connected to one another, the corrosive resistant material is deployed so as to coat the connector and terminal and reduce corrosion. In some embodiments, a connector terminal for connecting a cable to the terminal is also included. The connector terminal may include bores extending from a top to a bottom surface and channels in the bottom surface. When the terminal, terminal connector, and connector are connected together, the corrosive resistant material is squeezed into the bores and channels of the terminal connector so as to also coat the terminal connector.

    • In combination with a tractor (50) and a trailer (300) an apparatus (40) and method are provided for monitoring various operation conditions of at least the trailer by a driver positioned on the tractor. The apparatus preferably has a pneumatic braking system carried by the tractor and the trailer to permit the driver to supply pneumatic braking pressure from the tractor to the trailer. The pneumatic braking system preferably includes at least one pair of air hoses (105, 107) connected to the tractor and the trailer and a coupler connected to the pair of air hoses. The coupler (50) has interconnecting first and second coupler portions (110, 160) arranged to facilitate connecting and disconnecting the pair of air hoses. The apparatus also has a data communications system (200) which preferably includes a respective pair of transceivers (215, 245) connected to the first and second coupler portions for communicating signals representative of monitoring data from the trailer to the tractor so as to in turn be monitored by a driver positioned on the tractor.
