    • A method for controlling layer changes for an optical disk drive is provided, where a focus of a laserbeam emitted by a pickup head of the optical disk drive is moved from a current data layer of a disk to a target data layer of the disk. First, a position of a collimator lens of the pickup head is adjusted for spherical aberration correction. The objective lens is then lowered to a low position to move the focus of the laserbeam off the surface of the disk. The ob jective lens is then raised towards the disk. A focusing error signal is generated while the objective lens is being raised. Whether a target S-curve correspo nding to the target data layer is present in the focusing error signal is then started to be detec ted. If the target S-curve is detected, the focus on operation on the target data layer of the disk is successful.

    • Embodiments are directed to recording digital data on an optically ablatable digital storage media. In one embodiment, a device configured to ablate portions of ablatable material on an optically ablatable digital storage media receives digital data that is to be recorded on a recording layer of an optically ablatable digital storage media. The recording layer is formed on a substrate with zero or more intervening layers between the recording layer and the substrate. The recording layer includes ablatable material capable of storing digital data. The device ablates the ablatable material in the recording layer according to a sequence defined by the received digital data such that the ablated portions correspond to data points of the received digital data.

    • A disc drive designed to hold a cartridge containing an optical data storage disk is compatible with a memory card slot in a host digital electronics device such as a PDA, for example a slot designed for a Type I CompactFlash card. The disc drive contains a body assembly which is inserted into the memory card slot and which has a compatible connector at one end. The disc drive also includes a drive mechanism which contains the spindle motor and optics systems and which is located outside the memory card slot when the drive is in operation. The drive mechanism is lifted from the body assembly to form an opening to a tray into which a cartridge is loaded. The drive mechanism is then pressed against the body assembly to close the cartridge tray and to cause the spindle motor assembly to engage the optical disc within the cartridge. To minimize the extent to which the disc drive protrudes from the host device, part of the cartridge extends into the memory card slot when the disc drive is connected to the host.
