    • A method of manufacturing a pattern on a substrate web is disclosed, comprising: providing a production tool having a surface relief structure of elevations and depressions, the elevations corresponding to the desired pattern to be applied to the substrate web. A curable material is applied to the elevations of the surface relief structure on the production tool. The applied curable material on the surface relief structure is brought into contact with a substrate web at a first location. The substrate web and surface relief structure are transported together in contact from the first location to a second location, the first and second locations being spaced from one another along the transport direction of the substrate web. The substrate web is separated from the surface relief structure at the second location whereupon the curable material forming the pattern is affixed to and carried by the substrate web. The curable material on the substrate web is cured by exposure to at least one curing energy source, either while the substrate web and surface relief structure are in contact between the first and second locations and/or after the substrate web has been separated from the surface relief structure at the second location.

    • An apparatus and method for continuously electroplating metal webs by coating a masking ink thereto in a fashion resembling flexographic printing, then electroplating the uncoated areas of the web and finally removing the ink, is described. The masking ink is applied continuously from a reservoir to an "anilox" roller (46) which synchronously and rotatingly contacts either a plate roller (38) or an intermediate roller. Contact between the rollers transfers the masking ink from one roller to the other. The plate roller has "proud" or raised areas in which the ink is drawn and contacts a guided metal web (12) that is coated with the ink in a pattern matching that of the plate roller. Electroplating is effected after cleaning the inked web in an aqueous acid media. Finally, the masking ink is removed in an alkali medium.

    • Composite structures for producing articles include a core encapsulated in a somewhat rigid material. Both the core and encapsulating material can comprise a temperature resistant material to limit or substantially prevent degradation of the composite material when exposed to relatively high temperatures, such as those typically experienced during autoclave curing processes. The rigid material can be a wear resistance material that forms durable external surfaces. The core is made, in whole or in part, of carbon foam and the encapsulating material can be made, in whole or in part, of carbon fibers in a matrix. The composite structures can form a mandrel assembly for fabricating at least a portion of a fuselage of an aircraft.
