A selectively operable dispensing mechanism (25) has a movable support structure (30), an actuated support structure (32), and an actuation structure (29) retained by a manual actuator (26). First and second arms (90, 92) form the movable support structure (30) with distal portions (72) that are in proximity to support the lowermost utensil (102') when in a first condition and that are separated when in a second condition. When the actuator (26) is actuated, the stack of utensils (102), except for the lowermost utensil (102'), is supported so that the lowermost utensil (102') is dispensed.

The banded cutlery system includes a front tab and a rear tab, and at least one of the front tab and the rear tab comprises a contour that mates with a contour on the adjacent side of the cutlery pieces. The front tab may releasably attach to the rear tab by a fastener that may be located under the stack of cutlery pieces. The front tab may be configured to pivot relative to the rear tab from a locked position in which the front tab is generally parallel to the stack height (and the front and rear tabs are attached by the fastener) to an unlocked position in which the front tab is not parallel the stack height (and the front and rear tabs are not attached by the fastener).
