    • The invention relates to a chair (1) comprising a seat (2) and a supporting structure for the seat (2), wherein the seat (2) and supporting structure are associated for positioning of the seat (2) in at least an orientation in which the seat (2) has a downward inclination towards its front edge for facilitating at least exit from the chair (1). The supporting structure comprises an elongate member (21) on each side of the chair (1), each member (21) extending substantially continuously between the seat (2) and a rearward region (23) of the chair (1) via a floor-engaging region (7) of the supporting structure. Each elongate member (21) has a generally loop- shaped configuration in side view and the seat end region (22) of the elongate member overlies the opposite end region (25) of the elongate member (21). Each elongate member 21 is adapted to have an inherent resilience with a bias into a configuration in which the seat end region 22 is spaced from the opposite end region (25) in the unoccupied state of the chair (1) and the seat (2) has the desired forwardly-downward inclination, while the resilience of the elongate members (21) is selected such that when the chair (1) is occupied, the seat end region (22) approaches or comes into engagement with the opposite end region (25). The seat is adapted to facilitate ease of entry into and exit from the chair by placing the seat in a raised and forwardly-located position convenient for the user. In the favoured embodiment, the seat is in this position in its unoccupied condition, ready for user entry, and when the user sits into the chair, the chair moves into a comfortable and stable reclining orientation. When the user desires to get out of the chair, exit is facilitated in the favoured construction by forward weight transfer on the part of the seated user, this enabling the spring-like supporting structure to restore the occupied chair towards the easy entry/exit condition of the seat. A chair is thus achieved which is adapted to cater for the disabled and encumbered user, while providing an article of furniture which also meets the expectations of all users.
