    • The invention relates to a heating apparatus (600) which includes a raised platform (602) which includes a base (603) which defines a circular opening (607) therein. The platform (602) is configured to support a cooking vessel (604). The apparatus (600) further includes a heat and light source in the form of a candle (609) which is operatively arranged below the opening (607) in the base (603) such that heat released by the candle is channelled through the opening onto the vessel (604). The apparatus (600) also includes a transparent, evacuated double-walled heat insulator or tube (608) which is connected to, and depends, from the base (603) about the opening (607). The tube (608) allows light through which illuminates the surroundings and channels heat released by the candle (609) onto the vessel (604). The invention extends to other embodiments of heating/lighting apparatus.

    • A solar water and thermal power generating apparatus is shown. The solar water and thermal power generating apparatus includes a vacuum tube energy array, at least one thermoelectric module and a water tank. The vacuum tube energy array has at least one vacuum tube. The vacuum tube comprises a housing tube, an inner tube and a radiant energy converting device. The inner tube has a radiant energy receiving surface which absorbs radiant energy from the sun and converts the radiant energy to thermal energy, which is used to heat water. The radiant energy converting device is located within the housing tube and converts radiant energy to thermal energy. The thermoelectric module is attachable to and in thermal communication with the radiant energy converting device of the vacuum tube. The thermoelectric module receives thermal energy from at least the radiant energy converting device and converts the thermal energy to electricity. The water tank receives and stores water which has been heated.

    • A solar collector unit (10) which includes a trough-shaped compound parabolic concentrator (12). The concentrator is formed of two integral side-by-side portions (14), each having a compound parabolic cross-sectional configuration which extends inwardly from a free edge (16) and terminates at a common apex (18), thereby defining a ridge portion extending along the length of the trough-shaped concentrator. The concentrator has a generally omega-shaped cross-sectional configuration. The concentrator also defines a focal region (14', 14'') parallel to the ridge portion. The solar collector unit also includes an elongate receiver construction (22, 24) extending along the length of the concentrator in the focal region, thereby to receive solar energy focused thereat by the concentrator. The elongate receiver construction has an arrangement of parallel, interconnecting conduits for carrying a throughflow of a fluid to be heated. The ridge portion of the concentrator intersects with a tangential plane (28) common to at least a pair of the conduits, thereby substantially preventing gap loss thereat.
