    • The present invention relates to a method for controlling an ignition system of an internal combustion engine which has a primary firing pulse generator for charging a capacitor and an electronic switch for discharging the capacitor via an ignition coil to generate an ignition voltage. A microcomputer operates the switch to control the ignition timing of said generator, said microcomputer having speed detection means to directly or indirectly detect the rotational speed of the engine and a speed limitation control to limit the engine speed to a limitation speed below the clutch-in speed of a centrifugal clutch. In the present invention the speed limitation control is active or activated when starting the engine and being deactivated when said speed detection means detects a low speed state of the engine.

    • An ignition system (10) for energizing an ignition coil (100) of an internal combustion engine. The system (10) includes a high voltage unit (18) for energizing the ignition coil (100) of the engine, a memory (EEPROM, SRAM) for storing system function indices and a processor (20). The processor (20) receives a timing signal from an engine speed pick-up device (34), accesses the memory (EEPROM, SRAM) to retrieve the system function indices, and causes the high voltage unit to energize the ignition coil (100) based on the system function indices and the frequency of the timing signal. The system (10) also includes a programmer (12) in communication with the processor (20) to select and modify the system function indices during engine operation.
