    • The use of fiber metal or similarly high flow resistance and high acoustic transparency material as a liner for traditional acoustically absorptive media in a dissipative muffler exhibits improved low frequency sound attenuation, reduces back pressure, and eliminates media entrainment or "blow-out" phenomenon which results in longer muffler life. The same class of materials may also be used to fashion an element that provides linear occlusion inside an otherwise line-of-sight of muffler, where the occluding element provides improved impedance-matching acoustivc absorption. Disclosed embodiments providing linear occlusion minimize traditional increases in muffler backpressure by incorporating helical, conical, and annular members in mufflers with round ducts. To maximize attenuation, a muffler according to the invention may feature both a fiber metal fill liner and a fiber linear occlusion element. Further, the liner that connects the inlet (1) and outlet (2) ports of the muffler may feature an offset, elbow, or turn that would simultaneously allow it to provide means for linear occlusion.

    • The subject invention refers to a muffler comprising a muffler housing (1, 2) and generally a catalytic converter element (13) mounted in the housing, which muffler has at least one inner outlet (4) through which exhaust gases cleaned by the catalytic element (13) are intended to pass. Furthermore, according to the invention an outlet duct (30, 31) is arranged in connection to the outside of the housing, comprising a first section (30) for leading exhaust gases in a first direction (A) in parallel with the outside of the housing, and a second section (31) for leading exhaust gases in a second, opposite direction (B), whereby said first and second sections (30, 31) have an essentially equally large cross-sectional area. By way of this outlet duct an improved cooling of the exhaust gases before they are brought in contact with fresh air rich in oxygen can be achieved. A back-pulsation of fresh air into the muffler can also be prevented.

    • The exhaust system of an an internal combustion engine includes a duct having an input end coupled to the engine for passing and processing the exhaust gases and fumes emitted by the engine such that the duct functions as an anti-explosion and fire arrester device. The duct includes a reenforced filter structure (3) securely and firmly mounted within and across the duct opening. The filter structure (3) is coated with a noble metal to enhance oxidation of the gases and fumes passing through the duct. An insulator layer (303) is attached about and along the outer surface of the duct and a jacket (305) for carrying a coolant is mounted - above and about the insulator layer. The insulator layer (303) isolates the coolant from the duct to ensure that the temperature on the external side of the jacket is less than a predetermined value. Simultaneously, the insulator layer isolates the duct from the coolant to enable the temperature within the duct to have a sufficiently high value to sustain oxidation of the gases and fumes.
