    • Aluminum compounds represented by formula (1): Al(R -SO3)l(R )m(R )n (wherein R represents an optionally substituted hydrocarbon group; R represents an optionally substituted hydrocarbon group, an optionally substituted aliphatic hydrocarbonoxy group, or halogeno; R represents an optionally substituted aromatic hydrocarbonoxy group; and l, m, and n each is a number of 0 to 3, provided that (l+m+n)=3 and l is not 0); an acid catalyst containing the same; and a process for producing an ester, acetal, ketal, ether, or alkyl glycoside by using the catalyst. The catalyst is suitable for use in a variety of reactions such as acid-catalyzed reactions of alcohols, i.e., reactions with carbonyl compounds, e.g., esterification, transesterification, acetalization and ketalization, etherification, and ring-opening reactions of epoxy compounds. It is not deactivated by alcoholysis and has a sufficient activity, and the reactions catalyzed by it can be easily controlled and are reduced in side reactions. Consequently, using the catalyst enables an objective substance to be produced in a high yield from starting materials used in an almost equimolar proportion.
