Das Verfahren sieht zumindest die folgenden Verfahrensschritte vor: Bereitstellen der mindestens zwei gruppierten Artikel, die in einen Bewegungs- und/oder Handhabungsraum eines Applikationskopfes (1) positioniert werden. Einlegen mindestens eines vorkonfektionierten geschlossenen Umreifungsbandes in den Applikationskopf (1), in welchem das Umreifungsband in definierter Position fixiert wird. Der Applikationskopf (1) weist eine variable Öffnungsweite eines Käfigs (50) auf, der die gruppierten Artikel mantelseitig umfangen kann. Danach erfolgt das Absenken des mit dem mindestenseinen Umreifungsband ausgestatteten Applikationskopfes (1) über die Artikel mittels einerZustellbewegung, die in etwa parallel zu Längsmittelachsen der Artikel verläuft, wobei der Käfig (50) des Applikationskopfes (1) die gruppierten Artikel an ihren Mantelseitenkontaktiert und zumindest geringfügig komprimiert. Anschließend wird das Umreifungsbandes an einer vorgesehenen Position der Artikel durch definiertes Absenken des die Artikel gleichzeitig komprimierenden Applikationskopfes (1) positioniert, wonach die Öffnungsweite des Käfigs (50) des Applikationskopfes (1) vergrößert wird, unter gleichzeitiger Freigabe und Ablösen des mindestens einen Umreifungsbandes von seiner fixierten Position innerhalb des Applikationskopfes (1) und Anheben des Applikationskopfes (1) über die umreifte Artikelgruppierung und Entfernung von dieser.
