    • The claims describe a hydrofoil performance control system for waterborne vessels where the vessels weight is wholly or partially supported by fully or partially submerged hydrofoil or foils, and where the amount of lift provided by said foils is regulated as a function of that lift. A typical control system comprises one or more sensory inputs, a method or function to translate the input into a control output, and an actuator that turns the outputs into actual movements. In this invention the control input is the lifting force currently being produced by the hydrofoil. The movement output is the movement necessary to regulate the lifting force in response to the input as defined by the functional relationship between input and output. The invention combines the three elements of the basic control system into a single mechanical resistive element, where a resistive element is one that opposes the force applied to it and where said force produces a movement within said resistive element. The precise characteristics of said mechanical resistive element determine the functional mapping between the control input and the control output. Said mechanical resistive element may operate in compression, tension, or torsion depending on the precise mechanical arrangement used to support said hydrofoil(s). The movement produced in said mechanical resistive element is used to provide the control output movement through mechanical coupling that changes the lift produced by said hydrofoil by altering its angle of attack. The performance of the mechanical resistive element may be adjusted to change the overall performance of the control system.
