    • A method and apparatus for use in centrifugal casting of metal articles forms a compacted lining (204) of a particulate refractory material on an inner surface (22) of the mold. An amount of a dry binderless, particulate refractory material is dispensed on the inner surface (22) of a rotating mold body (12) to form a centrifugally densified layer. A plowing tool (16) is brought into contact with a layer of refractory material while continuously rotating the mold body to plow and compact the layer of particles. The tool (16) is oriented at an angle with respect to the direction of travel of the layer of particles to penetrate the layer and compact the particles toward the inner surface of the mold body. The combination of the centrifugal force and the mechanical compaction of the particles results in a dense, air impervious, compacted mold lining (204) having interlocked particles and voids between the particles that are not interconnected with an adjacent void. The mold is formed with at least one air outlet communicating with an inner surface of the mold. A porous lining is formed on the inner surface of the mold in communication with the air inlet and the air outlet. Rotation of the mold draws air through the inlet and the porous lining (206) and out through the outlet to cool the lining during casting.

    • A lifting strap (300; 700) for lifting primary products such as a bundle of aluminium ingots or the like is disclosed such including a strap comprising a closed, generally rectangular loop. The loop has a predetermined maximum defined size which is sufficient for it to be slipped over a stack of two superposed bundles of ingots (100), and further includes including perimeter reduction means (312; 800, 802) for reducing the size of the lifting strap (300, 700) by a relatively small percentage most typically less than 5%. The means (312, 800, 802) also define two areas of the strap which can act as lifting loops and present for a crane's hooks for lifting the bundle. In one embodiment the perimeter reduction means include a length of elastic material (312) forming a closed loop with the perimeter of the strap, and allowing the loop to expand when tension is applied to the elastic length. In an alternative embodiment, the lifting strap incorporates two sections of hook and loop fasteners (800, 802) such as Velcro adjacent each top corner of the strap. The strap (700) is applied to the bundle with the Velcro sections unconnected at one or both corners. The Velcro sections are then fastened together to secure the strap and form two lifting loops (804) which present for a crane's hooks to be attached thereto.

    • The use of green sand is eliminated by replacing green sand molds with all core sand assemblies that provide, during casting, both the internal and external surfaces of a casting, such as a cylinder head or engine block. In the process, a mold assembly (20) is formed from the same core sand that is used to form the core elements (23) defining the internal passageways of the casting. A mold-core carrier (10, 30, 40) is constructed with tapered sides (11, 31, 41) that hold the assembled mold (21, 22) and core elements (23) together during pouring of the molten iron alloy into the mold-core assembly (20) and the cooling period to form the casting. Although the carrier (10) sides can use a refractory liner (11), preferably the sides (41) are made of replaceable sheet metal backed by an open structural framework (42) to enhance cooling of the casting. After the casting is formed, the core sand from both the mold elements (21, 22) and the core elements (23) is recovered, and may be recycled and processed to form further mold elements or core elements or both.
