    • A hover vacuum cleaner (10) has a casing (11), an underside to the casing (16), an impeller and drive motor (28) for the impeller (29), a dust filter (44), an inlet for dust laden air, and exhaust port (18) in the, a pathway (30) for air to pass from the inlet, through the dust filter (44) and impeller (29) and around the motor (28), and through the exhaust port (18). The underside has dished air chambers (21, 22), covering a substantial area of the underside. Adjacent dished air chambers are separated by a dam (23, 24) which is transverse to the longitudinal axis. The exhaust port (18) is in direct fluid communication with one of the dished air chambers (21, 22) and the exhaust port also straddles the longitudinal axis. The underside has a peripheral groove which is in fluid communication with the exhaust port (18) and/or the adjacent air chamber (21, 22).

Pressurised air extracted from the dust chamber is blown into the partitions, for example via a plenum in the outer wall (18) or a keel skirt. The keel skirts create separate air cushions for hovering, independent of each other, and each enhances the lift produced by the pressurised air leaving the cleaner. One or two of these air cushions may be compromised without affecting the performance of the remaining cushions. The cleaner also has two chambers (11, 12), connected by one or more conduits (9) so that the motor (16) extracts air from an inlet (4) through both chambers (11, 12) before expelling the air through the base. The motor (16) may be centrally mounted between the chambers (11, 12) for improved weight distribution.
