    • A method and apparatus for image data compression includes detecting a portion of an image signal that uses a disproportionate amount of bandwidth compared to other portions of the image signal. The detected portion of the image signal result in determined components of interest. Relative to certain variance, the method and apparatus normalize the determined components of interest to generate an intermediate form of the components of interest. The intermediate form represents the components of interest reduced in complexity by the certain variance and enables a compressed form of the image signal where the determined components of interest maintain saliency. In one embodiment, the video signal is a sequence of video frames. The step of detecting includes any of: (i) analyzing image gradients across one or more frames where image gradient is a first derivative model and gradient flow is a second derivative, (ii) integrating finite differences of pels temporally or spatially to form a derivative model, (iii) analyzing an illumination field across one or more frames, and (iv) predictive analysis, to determine bandwidth consumption. The determined bandwidth consumption is then used to determine the components of interest.

    • HDTV (12) and analog format compatible image communication (Fig. 1) is done in a single analog channel bandwidth. Luminance and chrominance image (10) data of a scene to be transmitted is obtained. The image data is quantized and digitally encoded to form digital image data in HDTV transmission format having low-resolution (16) terms and high-resolution terms (14). The low-resolution (16) digital image data terms are transformed to a voltage signal corresponding to analog format color subcarrier modulation with retrace blanking and color bursts to form an analog format video signal (22, 28). The analog format video signal and the high-resolution digital image data terms are then transmitted in a composite (24, 26) analog format video transmission (24).

    • Methods and systems for combatting degradation in the transmission or storage of data signals are disclosed, especially useful in the field of motion picture or television signal transmission, such that an advanced receiver can decode that information to provide improved picture quality, while a standard receiver will display an image with minimally visible impairments. In particular, the present invention discloses that a data signal can be decomposed by filter circuitry (42) and summer (46) into a low frequency signal and a high frequency signal, and that the high frequency signal can then be modified by the application of a series of scaling factors using an adaptive scaling element (48) over selected regions in response to local variance of data values in such regions. The low frequency signal and the modified high frequency signal are then combined and transmitted (or recorded) as a modulated facsimile of the data signal, together with the scaling factors. In the advanced receiver (or playback unit), the data signal is reconstructed from the modulated facsimile with concomittant reduuction in signal degradation by the application of a series of inverse scaling factors.
