    • A portable card reader designed to be carried in a wallet or purse. In a first embodiment, the card reader has an electromagnetic head that reads information from a magnetic strip of a card. In a second embodiment, information is read from the card by an array of Hall sensors. In a further embodiment, the card reader uses a magnetic sensor based on magnetoresistive sensing of magnetic transitions of a magnetic stripe, suitable for use with small, portable electronic devices. In each embodiment, the information read from the card may be converted to a sequence of electronic bursts of predetermined frequency, preferably in the audible or ultrasound range. The sound signals are output by a speaker to the microphone of a telephone. The signal is then transmitted over the telephone lines to a remote receiver. The receiver then converts the sound bursts into signal pulses which can be read using the computer software of a conventional card reader. The invention also includes a method of fabricating a high resolution, low profile credit card reader having a magnetoresistive sensor.

    • A system and method for recording voice data to and reading voice data from a data storage device on an item of media including a housing, a controller and a data transfer unit. The housing includes a clamping mechanism adapted to receive and secure an item of media in a substantially fixed position relative to the housing. The item of media includes a data storage device. The controller is configured to process digitized data to generate data slices and to generate control signals. The controller is also configured to process the data slices to generate reconstructed digitized data. The data transfer unit is positioned within the housing and electrically connected to the controller. The data transfer unit is adapted to record the data slices on the data storage device in response to at least one of the control signals and to read the data slices from the data storage device in response to the control signals and to provide the data slices to the controller.

    • Method of configuring digital information in a recording storage media so as to significantly increase the information storage capacity of the media and the media containing such configured digital information. Information containing markers (P) are arranged and configured along tracks (N) in the media in a manner such that markers of adjacent tracks are offset relative to one another. Inter-track spacings (S2) of arcuately shaped tracks on a storage media are progressively reduced as a function of the radial spacing of the tracks from their center of curvature, further increasing the marker packing density. Return to zero pulsed modulation schemes are employed to maximize the amount of information recorded in a given number of marker locations. Drive means for reading digital information configured on storage media according to the principles of this invention are provided.
