    • In an arrangement in a vehicle for automatically setting settable vehicle functions (SU1, SU2 ... SUn) in accordance with previous settings for a user of the vehicle, a tachograph 5 (1) that is connected to a vehicle internal bus (6) is adapted, in response to insertion into the tachograph (1) of an authorization card (4) with a user specific code, to supply the user specific code of the inserted card (4) to the vehicle internal bus (6). Separate control units (ECU1, ECU2 ... ECUn) associated with the respective settable vehicle function (SU1, SU2 ... SUn) are connected to the vehicle internal bus (6) to receive the user 10 specific code. Each control unit (ECU1, ECU2 ... ECUn) is adapted to check, for each card (4) inserted into the tachograph (1), whether the user specific code of the card (4) and any setting of the corresponding, settable vehicle function (SU1, SU2 ... SUn) for the user are recorded in the control unit and, if that is the case, to set the settable function (SU1, SU2 ... SUn) as recorded and, if that is not the case, to record the user specific 15 code and any setting of the settable function made for the user while the card (4) is in the tachograph (1). (Fig. 1)

    • A tachometer (16) for a motor vehicle includes a controller (20) adapted to provide a current rpm value at a current gear which is engaged and at least one predicted rpm value at a different gear which is not currently engaged. A display (22) is operatively connected to the controller (20) and is adapted to produce an observable indication of the current rpm value and an observable indication of the predicted rpm value. By displaying predicted rpm values for different gears, the motor vehicle operator can easily see the effect of shifting gears so that the gears can be shifted in a manner to obtain optimum performance of the motor vehicle. The display preferably produces an observable indication of a power-peak rpm value (64) and an observable indication of a torque-peak rpm value (62) to aid the motor vehicle operator in obtaining optimum performance.

    • A tachometer for a motor vehicle includes a controller adapted to provide a current rpm value at a current gear which is engaged and at least one predicted rpm value at a different gear which is not currently engaged. A display is operatively connected to the controller and is adapted to produce an observable indication of the current rpm value and an observable indication of the predicted rpm value. By displaying predicted rpm values for different gears, the motor vehicle operator can easily see the effect of shifting gears so that the gears can be shifted in a manner to obtain optimum performance of the motor vehicle. The display preferably produces an observable indication of the current gear number near the current rpm value and an observable indication of the different gear number near the observable indication of the predicted rpm value. The display also preferably produces an observable indication of a power-peak rpm value and an observable indication of a torque-peak rpm valué to aid the motor vehicle operator in obtaining optimum performance. In one embodiment, the current rpm value is displayed as an arc-shaped bar graph wíth a heíght íncreasing from a low rpm end of the graph to a hígh rpm end of the bar graph. The predicted rpm values are arc-shaped bar graphs located adjacent the graph indicating the current rpm value. All of the bar graphs utilize common scale numbers with the graphs indicating predicted rpm values of lower gears located below the graph indicating the current rpm value and graphs of predicted rpm values of higher gears located aboye the graph indicating the current rpm value. A numerical indication of the current gear is located at the end of the graph indicating the current rpm value and numerical indications of higher and/or lower gears are located at the end of the graphs indicating the predicted rpm values. In alternative embodiments, the current and predicted rpm values are as adjacent vertical linear bar graphs, horizontal linear bar graphs, coaxial circular bar graphs, and separate spaced-apart circular graphs.

    • Method and apparatus for reading tachograph discs employs a document scanner feeding data to a personal computer and associated printer. Analysis of electronic data from the scanner enables first the establishment of the disc type and orientation, followed by identification of the data traces and analysis of these by reference to concentric bands of the disc which are converted from circular to linear form, and by a line-following process, as part of the data-processing method. Activities and violations of international vehicle regulations can be identified by counting the crossing points of the graphic trace with respect to predetermined traces representing vehicle use parameters such as speed. The computer produces a graphic display or printed summary of the data or image from the disc.
