    • A lightweight ballistic armor system comprising at least one metal strike face plate, a laminate composite backing material secured to the at least one metal strike face plate and an optional air space provided between the metal strike face plate and the laminate composite backing material. The metal strike face plate or plates has a predetermined defined thickness and has a plurality of slotted holes set at an angle relative to the vertical orientation or axis of the metal strike face plate, or which are straight. The plurality of slotted holes is sufficiently small to prevent the passage of a projectile or fragment therethrough. The laminate composite backing material comprises at least one material selected from an aramid fiber material, S-glass, E-glass, polypropylene and UHMWPE, and is provided in combination with a polymer-based resin material. The optional air space provided between the metal strike face plate and the composite backing material has a depth in the range between 0 - 12 inches.

    • There is described a method for positioning an object on an optical sensor system for acquiring a surface thereof, the sensor system having a set of motors for rotating the object around a motor axis perpendicular to an optical axis of the sensor system and for translating the object in X, Y and Z directions, the method comprising: (a) acquiring a relief map of an area in a field of view of the sensor system; (b) computing a normal representative of a topography of the relief map of the area; (c) determining an angle difference between the normal and the optical axis of the sensor system; (d) comparing the angle difference to a threshold angle to determine if the surface of the area is perpendicular to the sensor axis; (e) if the angle difference is greater than a threshold angle, rotating the object to obtain a new difference angle less than the threshold angle; and (f) translating the object to reposition the area in the field of view after the rotating has displaced the area.

    • This invention relates to the selection of approaches and features to be used to detect MMM similarities in analysis and comparison of marks created by metal-metal interaction and which are usable in criminology (MMM) - marks on bullets and cartridge cases, and the parts thereof, fired from firearms; marks left by cutting and stabbing weapons on various metal media; marks left by metal tools and devices on various metal media; and/or all these marks themselves or new signals obtained through certain transformation(s) and/or filter(s). In this method, MMM analysis is conducted by using topographic information of the 3-dimensional surface (topography) and certain feature information derived from that topographic information. Methods explained in this patent can also be used in comparison of three dimensional marks of any two three-dimensional objects such as shoe prints, tire prints, or three-dimensional models of human face.
