    • An enclosure (34) having a floor (40), a plurality of walls disposed around the floor (40) and a ceiling. The enclosure (34) also has an inlet (32) and an outlet (42). The outlet (42) is disposed in one of the walls near to the floor (40) and the apparatus also includes tubing (50) disposed within the enclosure (34) for heat exchange relationship with associated ash entering the inlet (32) of the ash cooler. In some forms of the invention the floor (40) is planar and is disposed in oblique relationship to a horizontal plane. The outlet (42) may be disposed proximate to the floor (40) at the lowest elevational part thereof and the enclosure (34) may be generally rectangular and may have first and second opposed sides and opposed third and fourth sides and the first and second sides are longer than the third and fourth sides. In some cases the ratio of the length of the first and second sides to the length of the third and fourth sides is two or three to one. In some embodiments the floor (40) slopes from downwardly from the third side to the fourth side with the intersection of the floor (40) with the first and second sides defining lines that are oblique with respect to a horizontal plane. The inlet (32) is disposed proximate to the third side. The ash cooler may further include a plurality of nozzles (44) extending from the floor (40). The plurality of nozzles (44) each have a head disposed above the floor and directing a fluid toward the fourth side whereby ash deposited within the enclosure (34) is urged by fluid passing through the nozzles (44) to move toward the fourth side.

    • The present invention relates to an apparatus, a fluidized bed reactor system (10), including a reactor chamber (12) defined by a wall structure (18, 20, 22) formed by a plurality of tubes and means for passing heat transfer medium through said tubes to apply heat to said tubes. A fast fluidized bed of solid material is established in the reactor chamber (12). A solid material processing chamber (24) is disposed adjacent the reactor chamber on the outward side of the wall structure defining said reactor chamber for e.g. recovering heat from the solid material. The processing chamber shares a common wall portion (26) with the reactor chamber and a slow fluidized bed of solid material is provided in the processing chamber. The common wall portion (26) is provided with at least two inlet openings (40) extending therethrough, which are formed between tubes forming the wall structure. The present invention also relates to a method of manufacturing a common wall portion (26) between a circulating fluidized bed reactor and a processing chamber (24) adjacent the circulating fluidized bed reactor. The method comprises forming the openings by bending a portion of the tubes forming the wall out of the plane of the wall.

    • A reactor chamber (12, 112, 312) of a fluidized bed reactor (10) has an internal circulation of particles. Larger recirculated particles are prevented from contacting heat transfer surfaces (40, 140) by classifying particles adjacent the bottoms (24, 124, 224) of the reactor chamber (12, 112, 312) using a particle chamber (22, 122, 222, 322) having a barrier wall (30, 130, 230, 330) with holes (50) or slots (52) of a maximum dimension of less than about 30 mm. Larger particles flow down the walls of the particle chamber into the reactor chamber, and some fine particles within the particle chamber are preferably recirculated back to the fluidized bed. The barrier wall is preferably the top wall of the particle chamber, and may be refractory lined with furrows (54), and/or may be formed of water tubes (64) connected together by fins (66), with the holes or slots formed in the fins.
