    • Solid state lighting systems using organic LEDs (OLEDs) are disclosed. Embodiments of the present invention provide a solid state lighting system (100, 200, 300) and a luminaire (400) wherein substantially white light is generated by a combination of an organic LED (OLED) (108, 208, 308) and another type of solid state emitter (104, 204, 304). The other type of solid state emitter (104, 204, 304) may be, for example, a conventional LED made from inorganic materials. The OLED (108, 208, 308) is positioned so that substantially white light is emitted from the lighting system (100, 200, 300) by mixing light from the two types of sources. In some embodiments, a dichroic mirror (314) can also be used at the opening of a mixing chamber (102, 202, 302) to prevent absorption of light from the OLED (108, 208, 308) back into the mixing chamber (102, 202, 302) or conventional LEDs within the mixing chamber (102, 202, 302).
