    • In order to establish temporary activity areas in or near larger cities it is proposed to make use of existing wet areas, on which platforms (2, 10) are established by means of a principally known technique for building light bridges, which are here mounted side by side so as to form a large floor. An associated large number of tubular bridge poles (38) ensure a high carrier capacity, and these poles are easy to mount by a direct flushing down, while, as an important matter, they are equally easy to dismount in being forced up by means of pressurized water or air. The mounting and demounting can be effected using simple auxiliaries, including a one man operated crane having guiding means for the poles (58, 60), and a high degree of stiffness in the construction is achieved by the use of individually tightened chain cross-struttings (44, 46) between the poles (38) of each pair or poles. The mounting can be effected with a low number of standard components and without help from the water side.

    • A temporary bridge for supporting heavy loads includes elongate hollow cylinders. A first rigid flat plate is horizontally disposed in overlying relation to each hollow cylinder and a second rigid flat plate is horizontally disposed in underlying relation to each hollow cylinder. Stress-distributing strengthening members formed by a pair of legs that are angularly disposed with respect to one another are circumferentially positioned about each hollow cylinder and the respective free ends of the legs are secured to their associated rigid flat plates. A key extends from a first end of each hollow cylinder and a mating socket is formed in a second end of each hollow cylinder to facilitate end-to-end interconnection of a plurality of hollow cylinders. Further embodiments include longitudinally-disposed timber mats, pedestrian walkways and curvature-creating members so that the bridge may follow a non-linear path of travel.

    • A steel-concrete composite structure (1) is described. The steel-concrete composite structure comprises a steel member (2) having an upper surface (5) and a plurality of shear connector elements (6) upstanding from the upper surface and a concrete slab (4) having upper and lower surfaces (7, 8). The slab is supported on its lower surface by the upper surface of the steel member. The slab comprises a plurality of through holes (9) between the upper and lower surfaces, each through hole tapering towards the lower surface so as to form an inverted frustally-shaped seating surface (10). The concrete slab is configured and positioned with respect to the steel member such that at least one shear connector element projects into each through hole. The steel-concrete composite structure comprises a plurality of removable inverted frustoconical plugs (15), each plug having top and bottom surfaces (18, 19; Fig. 6) and an inverted frustoconically-shaped plugging surface (20; Fig. 6). Each plug has at least one through hole (16) between the top and bottom surfaces. At least one plug (15) is seated in a corresponding through hole (9) of the concrete slab. Each plug is configured such that at least one of the least one shear connector elements (6) projecting into the corresponding through hole (9) is received by a corresponding though hole (16) of the plug. The structure also comprises a plurality of fasteners (17, 29), each fastener coupled to a corresponding shear connector element and arranged to discourage removal of a plug (15) from a through hole (9) of the concrete slab.
