    • A drying and mixing plant is provided comprising a tapered inner drum (1) and an oppositely tapered outer drum (4) attached together concentrically and rotated as a unit. A burner (37) directs a hot air stream into the small end (2) of the inner drum (1). Material is fed into the small end of the inner drum, where impellers (40) lift it and drop it into the hot air stream and move the material through the inner drum (1) aided by the downward taper of the inner drum. The material exits the inner drum and enters the outer drum (4) where an additive material is introduced and mixed with the material (42) as both move through the chamber (28) between the inner and outer drums to a material outlet. The receiving end (5) of the outer drum (4) is enclosed in a shroud (12), therefore the air stream is directed through the chamber (28) between the drums, the chamber having an expanding cross section which slows the air down allowing fines to precipitate out. The device may include nozzles (17) for spraying water across the path of the air stream and material flow, and further may include, for fluid additive materials, additive nozzles (21, 23) spraying the additive material across the path of the air and material. A third drum (43) may be provided inside the inner drum (1), allowing separate addition of a third material (47), and further reducing fines in the air. The device is particularly suitable for mixing asphalt paving mix.

    • A hot mix asphalt plant for producing hot mix asphalt using a high percentage of RAP comprising a first dryer adapted to receive and mix virgin aggregates and RAP fines and a first burner assembly adapted to produce a burner flame and heat and dry the virgin aggregates in the first dryer.     • A dryer drum coater (110) reduces blue smoke emissions by evacuating the blue smoke from the dryer drum coater independently of the exhaust of combustion products. The blue smoke, produced when heated and dried aggregate is mixed with other asphaltic products such as RAP or liquid asphalt, is preferably evacuated from a vapor outlet (216) formed remote from the exhaust products outlet of the coater and adjacent the heated and dried aggregate inlet of the mixing chamber. Evacuating the blue smoke at this location obviates the need to separate the blue smoke from the combustion products and also prevents the introduction of excess oxygen into the combustion zone of the dryer drum coater. In a particularly preferred arrangement, the evacuated blue smoke is fed directly to the combustion air inlet of the coater's burner (122) blower and is thereby incinerated.

    • A rotary drum dryer (12) has devices for cooling shielding flights (44) located in the combustion zone of the drum. The devices comprise cooling flights (46) which rotate with the drum to scoop up relatively small amounts of virgin aggregate from aggregate accumulated in the lower portion of the drum and to shower this aggregate over the outer radial surface of the shielding flights (44) upon further rotation of the drum, thereby cooling the shielding flights without substantially decreasing the mean temperature of the aggregate. Cooling efficiency is enhanced by the continuous cascading of fresh aggregate over the shielding flights from the cooling flights (46) through a substantial portion of the drum's rotation. The cooling flights and shielding flights preferably cooperate to limit or even prevent the showering of materials into the burner flame (24) and thus inhibit burner flame quenching and accompanying emissions. Particularly preferred cooling flights take the form of auxiliary flights which can be easily adapted to existing shielding flight designs.
