    • A method is disclosed of terminating an end of an elongate member (16), such as a cable or pipe, formed of thermoplastic composite material. The end of a elongate member is assembled with a collar member (40) and a mandrel member (54), and the assembly is then worked so as to secure the members to the end of the elongate member. The assembling step comprises arranging the end of the elongate member around the mandrel member and inside the collar member. At least one of the mandrel and collar members has a surface facing the end of the elongate member that is non-cylindrical and at least the other of the mandrel and collar members is deformable towards the end of the elongate member. The working step comprises the steps of heating the assembly so that the end of the elongate member becomes soft and tacky, then deforming said other member so that the end of the elongate member is compressed between the mandrel and collar members, and then allowing the assembly to cool so that the end of the elongate member becomes bonded to the mandrel and collar members. The compression of the end of the elongate member while soft and tacky causes it to deform so as to conform to the non-cylindricity of said one member so that the end of the elongate member, once cool, cannot subsequently be removed from the assembly without further deformation. Furthermore, the compression of the end of the elongate member while soft and tacky between the mandrel and collar members causes the thermoplastics, once cool, to bond to the mandrel and collar members so that the end of the elongate member cannot subsequently be removed from the assembly without breaking the bond. A construction of cable using ribbons is also disclosed.

    • The invention relates to a textile rope (1, 15) whose surface (3) is formed by a tubular braiding (2) consisting of a plurality of strands and which presents a splice joint (5).     • A spliced rope apparatus and a method of forming the same are disclosed. The apparatus has a first rope including a first plurality of strands and a second rope including a second plurality of strands. The apparatus also has a splice connecting the ropes and defined by the first and second pluralities of strands. The splice has a spiral section including a first pair having strands of the first plurality of strands that are positioned proximate each other. The first pair extends helically and the strands of the first pair together pass under a plurality of picks defined by the second plurality of strands and together pass over a remainder of the second plurality of strands. The splice also has a tuck section in which at least some of the first plurality of strands extend longitudinally to pass under and over sequential picks defined by the second plurality of strands.
