    • Presently, multifunctional carboxylic acids, such as 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) are used to bond a hydroxyl-functional organophosphorous oligomer to cotton fabric in the presence of a catalyst, such as sodium hypophosphite (NaH 2 PO 2 ). However, the free carboxylic acid groups bound to the cotton fabric form a calcium salt during home laundering, thus diminishing the flame retardant properties of the treated cotton fabric. Disclosed herein is a new catalyst system consisting of hypophosphorous acid (H 3 PO 2 ) and a nitrogen-containing organic base such as triethanol amine (TEA). When the catalyst system is present together with the polycarboxylic acid, TEA esterifies the free carboxylic acid groups under curing conditions, thus reducing calcium concentration on the fabric during home laundering. It also provides nitrogen-phosphorous synergism to enhance the flame retardant performance of the organophosphorous compound. The cotton fabric treated with BTCA and the hydroxyl-functional organophosphorous oligomer in the presence of this new catalyst system demonstrate flame retardant properties superior to that treated with NaH 2 PO 2 as a catalyst.

    • The present invention relates to compositions and a process which utilizes said compositions for providing cellulosic fabric and cellulosic fabric blends with durable press, said process comprising the steps of contacting fabric with a composition comprising: a) from about 0.1 % to about 20 % by weight, of a cellulose modifying compound having formula (I) wherein R is a backbone linking unit; each R is independently i) a cellulose reactive moiety; ii) a polysaccharide unit; iii) s-triazine units having formula (II); iv) pyrimidine units having formula (III); v) cyclotriphosphazene units having formula (IV); vi) and mixtures thereof; wherein R is hydrogen, C1-C4 alkyl, or R ; X is -N-, -CH-, or mixtures thereof; the index m is from 0 to 5, the index n is from 0 to 5; b) from about 0.01 % to about 10 % by weight, of a crosslinking catalyst; and c) the balance carriers and other adjunct ingredients. The compositions of the present invention can take the form of laundry detergent compositions, fabric post-laundry spray-on compositions, and the like.

    • A method of making a fiber comprised of poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) having monomer groups grafted onto the fiber surface, the method comprising the steps of (i) providing a fiber of poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) that has been dried to remove adsorbed moisture, (ii) treating the fiber, in a non-polar solvent that will not dissolve the fiber, with a phosphazene base that exhibits a pKa in dimethylsulfoxide of at least 21 so as to generate anions at the amide sites on the surface of the poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) fiber, (iii) washing the base-activated fiber with an aprotic solvent, (iv) grafting a monomer onto the anion sites so as to introduce reactive functional groups onto the surface of the poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) fiber, and (v) washing the grafted fiber of step (iv) with a protic solvent to extract any residual base compounds and grafting agents that are unbound to the surface of the fibers.
