    • A labelling machine (10) for applying an elongate self-adhesive label (16) to a pack (14) so as to overlie the top, at least one side and optionally part of the underside of the pack (14), comprises a product feed conveyor (13) for the packs through a labelling station (15) and a label conveyor (26) for advancing a succession of labels to the labelling station, with a narrow edge of each label leading. The label conveyor extends at substantially 90° to the product feed conveyor and labels are transferred from the label conveyor to the top of a conveyed pack with at least one end portion of the label extending beyond the adjacent pack edge. The projecting end portion is urged on to the side face of the pack and optionally is wrapped on to the underside of the pack. A controller controls the advancement of the labels in an indexed relationship to the advancement of the packs and the transfer of the labels such that each label is applied to a respective pack thereof at a pre-set location along the length of a pack.

    • The labeling machine (10) includes a rotatable vacuum drum (60), which includes engaging means (28) for rotatably engaging the corners (18A) of non-round articles (20). The engaging means (28) engages a first corner (18A) to rotate the article (20) between drum (60) and pad (58) such that the drum (60) generates a torque which rotates the article (20) with the drum (60) and which compresses the roll on pad (58). The pad (58) stores compressed torque energy. As article (20) rotates to a position where the first corner is disengaged from the engaging means (28) and a flat or face portion (22) of the article (20) is against the drum (60), the roll on pad (58) imparts or releases the stored energy near or on a second corner of the article (20) until the engaging means engages the second corner of the article to continue rotation of the article between the drum (60) and the pad (58) and wherein the label is applied to the surface of the non-round article.

    • The labelling machine (10) generally comprises a conveyor system for conveying packaging (20) through the labelling machine (10). The conveying system is arranged to move a line of packagings (20) through the labelling machine (10) in a continuous manner. The labelling machine (10) also provides a label feed system for feeding labels (11) through the labelling machine (10) in order to be adhered to the packaging (20). The label (11) is driven through the labelling machine (10) in at least three stages in which in the first stage the label (11) is driven by a central feed device (30), a first lateral feed device (32) and a second lateral feed device (34); in the second stage the drive from the central feed device (30) is removed and the label (11) is driven by the first lateral feed device (32) and the second lateral feed device (34); and in the third stage the drive from the first lateral feed device (32) and the second lateral feed device (34) is removed and the label (11) is driven by a first lateral edge applicator (60) and a second lateral edge applicator (61). The labels (11) are guided by the edge applicators (14, 16) and these both positively drive both lateral side portions of the labels (11) forwards and also on to the surface of the packaging (20) rather than simply guiding the labels (11) with a static guide surface. The edge applicators (14, 16) are arranged to move from an upper position to a lower position as the label (11) emerges from underneath the central applicator (12). Accordingly, the label (11) is initially at least partially adhered to the upper surface of the packaging (20) and then the two edge applicators (14, 16) are moved downwardly whilst applicator belts (61, 61) are being driven such that the side portions of the label (11) are driven forwardly by the applicator belts(60, 61) of the edge applicators (14,16) whilst also being moved downwardly by the edge applicators (14, 16).

    • A labelling apparatus is disclosed for applying self-adhesive labels to label receiving surfaces of a bottle. The apparatus includes a conveyor means for transferring bottles through a label applying station and means for dispensing body labels onto a first vacuum belt transport means which passes through the label applying station, with the adhesive face of the labels facing outwardly. A pad causes the bottle to contact with the adhesive face of a first label to adhere the first body label to a first location on the body of the bottle and causes rotation of the bottle in a first direction about its axis so as to wrap the body label onto the body of the bottle. Means for partially applying a neck label to the neck of the bottle while continuing to rotate the bottle in the same first direction are also provided together with endless belt means for subsequently rotating the bottle in an opposite, counter, direction to the first direction whilst continuing to convey the bottle along the conveying means, and for applying pressure to the neck label to complete the application of the neck label to the neck of the bottle.
