    • A traction servomotor (74) for supplying a control valve (66) with an operational input independently of an operator pedal assembly (16) in response to a signal supplied to a controller (116) indicating a different rotational spin of the wheels of a vehicle. The traction servomotor (74) has a housing (80) with an input rod (76) with a first section retained in axial openings in the housing and a second section is pivotally connected to the operator pedal assembly (16). The interior of the housing (80) is divided by a diaphragm (96) which is attached to the first portion of the input rod (76). The controller (116) is connected to the housing (80) such that in a first mode of operation wherein the activation of the control valve (66) is dependent on an input from the operator pedal assembly (16) a first fluid pressure is presented to both sides of the diaphragm (96) and in a second mode of operation, a second fluid pressure is presented to one side of the diaphragm (96) to create an actuation pressure differential. The actuation pressure differential acts on and moves the input rod (76) to activate the control valve (66). Activation of the contral valve (66) allows an operational pressure differential to be created in a brake booster (12) and an ECU (34) thereafter selectively controls the communication of pressurized fluid to the driving wheels to effect a brake application in the wheels and absorb some driving torque to synchronize the rotational spin of the wheels.

    • A vacuum booster for a vehicle brake system provides a working pressure valve seat (141) on a translating valve member (140) axially movable with respect to the air valve body (102), the latter being an input member for operation input to the booster. A rotary electric motor (106) has an output shaft coupled through rotary to linear motion conversion apparatus to move the translating valve member with its working pressure valve seat relative to the air valve body. The motion conversion apparatus preferably includes a screw (148) on the output shaft of the rotary electric motor, an axial nut (150) engaged with the screw for axial movement with rotation of the screw and a radial drive pin (152) engaging the nut with the translating valve member for mutual axial motion. This drive arrangement provides much greater mechanical force than a linear solenoid; and this allows a more straightforward design of the valve arrangement, particularly the use of a high friction seal such as a simple "O"-ring (144) in a groove. In further contrast to a linear solenoid, it further provides positive control of the working pressure valve seat position, mechanical advantage in the motion conversion apparatus and an extended range of travel with constant force throughout the range.

    • A vacuum brake booster (12) for use in a brake system (10) having a traction control function to selectively effect a brake appliction of driving wheels of a vehicle to synchronize the rotational spin thereof. The vacuum brake booster (12) has movable wall (62) which separates a housing (56) into a front chamber (58) and a rear chamber (60). The front chamber (58) is connected to the rear chamber (60) by a first passage (61), a bore (59) and a second passage (63) in the movable wall (62). A first control valve (66) located in the bore (59) controls communication of a first fluid through the first passage (61) to the bore (59) to equalize fluid pressure between the first (58) and second (60) chamber in a rest mode of operation and communication of a second fluid through the second passage (63) to create a pressure differential in the brake booster (12) to produce a first operational output in an operational mode of operation. The first operational output force is supplied to a master cylinder (14) form which pressurized fluid is supplied to the wheel brakes to effect a brake application for the vehicle. A second control valve (80) responsive to an operational signal from an electronic control unit (34) corresponding to rotational spin of the drive wheels of a vehicle, communicates an operational signal to means (88, 150) to interrupt communication of the first fluid between the front chamber (58) and rear chamber (60). The second control valve (80) thereafter initiates communication of a second fluid to the second chamber (80) to create a pressure differential to develop a second opertional output force. The second operational output force is supplied to the master cylinder (14) from which pressurized fluid is selectively communicated to the driving wheels to effect a brake application which synchronizes the rotational spin of the driving wheels.
