    • The present invention relates to an improved method of manufacture of molded polymeric devices using variable frequency microwaves. Molded polymeric devices include, for example, contact lenses, corneal rings, intraocular lenses and drug delivery devices such as anterior or posterior chamber inserts. Contact lenses include soft and rigid gas permeable contact lenses as well as, lens blanks lathed into finished contact lenses. Molded polymeric devices further include medical devices such as prosthetics including hip joints. According to the present invention, a mold (2) having a cavity the shape of the desired molded polymeric device, the cavity containing a composition comprising one or several monomers having double polymerizable bonds, is placed in a microwave chamber (8). The mold (2) can be plastic, glass, ceramic or metal. Plastic is preferred. The mold (2) is then swept with at least one range of microwave frequencies to polymerize the composition, thus forming the molded polymeric device. A range of frequencies includes a central frequency selected to rapidly heat the composition. A range is selected to generate a plurality of modes within the chamber (6). Sweeping is performed at a rate selected to avoid damage to the polymer formed and the mold (2).

    • The present invention relates to a method for producing a compression moulded product by means of a moulding tool (1) and the said moulding tool. The method is characterised in that both a carrier, comprising sheets of a fibre material impregnated with a first thermosetting plastic material, and a film pack comprising at least one sheet of film which includes a second thermosetting plastic material, which may be the same thermosetting plastic material as the first, are introduced into the moulding tool (1). The moulding tool (1) is then closed and preheats the carrier and the film pack in order to make the plastic material in these viscous. In the next stage a force is applied in order to prepress the mould halves (3a, 3b) of the moulding tool against one another, thereafter producing venting. A second force is then applied in order to again press the two mould halves against one another. Finally the moulding tool (1) is opened for removal of the product thereby produced, comprising the compression moulded carrier and the film pack integrated therewith.

    • Composite articles are prepared by resin transfer molding and an applied gas pressure during heating. A mass of reinforcement is placed into a mold (22), and the mold (22) is evacuated. A resin source (36) is connected to the mold (22), and thermosetting resin is introduced into the mold (22) from the source (36). A gas pressure source (44) is connected to the mold (22), and an external column (40) of resin is maintained in the gas pressure line (46). The mold (22) is heated to set and cure the resin within the mold (22), but the resin in the external column (40) is maintained in an unset condition. After the resin is introduced into the mold (22) and simultaneously with the heating of the resin, a gas pressure is applied to the column (40) of liquid resin, preferably at a pressure greater than the vapor pressure of water at the temperature to which the resin is heated, to prevent gas evolution to form bubbles during setting and curing and to minimize the volume of any bubbles already present in the resin from other sources.
