    • A waste water filtration tank (1) receives waste water under hydrostatic pressure. The tank (1) collects solids using a filter screen (7). When the screen (7) becomes clogged with collected solids, liquid is forced into a float chamber (6) which contains a float (13). As waste water collects in the float chamber (6), the float (13) rises, as do a beam member (14) and a pair of rod members (19) to which the float (13) is attached. When the float (13) reaches a predetermined level, cams contained on the rising rod members (19) act on spring-loaded latches, opening the latches and permitting a spring loaded sleeve (20) and reservoir gate (17) to rise, opening the reservoir outlet (12). Accumulated solids are then drained from the reservoir and the backwash from the screen chamber (2) also clears the clogged screen (7).

    • This invention relates to a novel intermittent slow sand filter and a method of using the intermittent filter. More particularly, this invention pertains to a novel slow sand filter which remains effective, even when intermittently operated, and which can be periodically cleaned without disturbing the action of the intermittent filter. A slow sand filter apparatus comprising: a container having an upper portion and a lower portion; a water inlet in the upper portion of the container, the water inlet being connected to a supply of water; a filter material filling at least the lower portion of the container, the filter material having a top surface below the water inlet; a schmutzdeuke layer on the top surface of the filter material; a water outlet in the lower portion of the container below the top surface of the filter material; and a water level maintenance device in the upper portion which maintains water in the upper portion of the container at a maintenance level above the top surface of the filter material, the maintenance level being a balance between (1) a water maintenance level that is sufficiently deep that water falling from the water inlet onto the top of the water in the container does not significantly disturb the schmutzdeuke layer; and (2) a water maintenance level that is sufficiently shallow that oxygen from the air above the water level can diffuse through the water and reach the schmutzdeuke layer so that the schmutzdeuke layer is maintained in living condition even when there is no flow of water through the water inlet.

    • A filter and a method for filtration is based upon a moving filter surface (10) being caused to move through a first filtration region (FF) for separation of a pre-filtrate and a second filtration region (KF) for separation of a clear filtrate. A vacuum is applied on the filtrate side in the clear filtrate filtration region (KF) for the purpose of promoting filtrate passage. According to the invention two filtration zones (FF1 and FF2) with mutually different pressure conditions are established in the pre-filtrate region (FF). In the first filtration zone (FF1) atmospheric pressure or a relatively weak vacuum is present on the filtrate side. In the second filtration zone (FF2), a vacuum involving a pressure which is lower than the pressure in the first filtration zone (FF1) is present on the filtrate side. The pressure change between the filtration zones (FF1 and FF2) is performed in the pre-filtrate region, i.e. before the filter surface has reached the clear filtrate region (KF).

    • An apparatus for filtering liquids, especially for recovering fibres from white water, includes rotatable filter discs (5) at least partly immersed in the liquid to be filtered, and a shaft wall connected to the discs and forming a circular cylindrical filtrate chamber, which extends centrally through the discs.     • A filtration device and method for removing pollutants from fluid such as storm-water. The filtration device has a chamber including a series of pivotal filtration assemblies each including a weir and filter. The filters are selected and positioned for sequentially filtering larger then smaller pollutant particles from the water flowing through the device. The weirs are configured and positioned for sequentially permitting water overflow of (and thereby taking off-line) the smaller-particle size filters then the larger-particle size filters from the water flowing through the device.
