    • The specification describes specie-separating and concentration-enhancing methods and apparatus which operate on a substantially continual basis. The constituents of a mixture are separated according to their respective influencability by motion in the direction of a separation influence and the species of like net influencability are transported in substantially continuous streams (18A, 18B), each of opposite net influencability running near each other, in a direction or directions transverse to the separation influence, the streams (18A, 18B) being in communication parallel to the separation influence so as to transfer at least one of the separable species from one stream to another stream by virtue of continued separation of influenceable species as the respective streams (18A, 18B) progress transversely to the separation influence. The two streams (18A, 18B) can run in the same direction (co-current) or in respectively opposite directions (countercurrent).

    • This disclosure relates to a method for deaerating a liquid layer such as a coating solution using electrostatic forces. A flow of charged particles is created above and moved towards a low conductivity liquid layer. The flow of charged particles causes localized thinning of the liquid layer which facilitates the removal of bubbles of entrained gas from the liquid by bringing those bubbles closer to the exposed surface of the liquid and rupturing them at that surface. This electrostatic deaeration technique is combined with other non-electrostatic liquid layer thinning techniques or degassing techniques to further facilitate removal of bubbles from the liquid in preparation of further processing of the liquid. The liquid layer may be stationary or flowing with respect to the application of charge particles.

    • An apparatus for separating different components of a mixture of material includes a separation chamber having a structure definin g confronting electrode surfaces (10, 12) having a gap (15) between the confronting electrode surfaces and an assembly for adjusting the gap (15) between the confronting electrode surfaces. In addition, the apparatus includes a source of a separation influence applied across the gap (15) towards at least one of the confronting electrode surfaces. The apparatus also includes a belt assembly (18) that mechanically transports a mixture of material in streams running transversally to the separation influence, wherein the components of the mixture are deflected into the transverse streams. Further, the apparatus includes at least one exit port (26, 28) at an end of the separation chamber to remove the components from the separation chamber. The assembly for adjusting the gap results in an improved separation performance. In particular, the assembly for adjusting the gap allows for compensation of the separator performance while the separator is operating.
