    • [Problem] To provide a resinous mouthpiece that has a palate plate and easily measures pressures related to the oral cavity, including lingual pressure. [Solution] This device uses: a U-shaped mouthpiece (1) formed from an elastic material or a flexible material, and following the maxillary dental arch; a palate plate (2) formed from an elastic material or a flexible material, and having a projection (4) approximating the incisive papilla; and a plurality of pressure sensors (3) attached to the mouthpiece (1) and the palate plate (2). This device is configured such that a pressure is detected by a pressure detection unit in communication with the plurality of pressure sensors (3). The pressure detection unit is connected by a cable (5). The pressure detection unit is in communication with the plurality of pressure sensors (3). The U-shaped mouthpiece (1) following the maxillary dental arch and the palate plate (2) having the projection (4) approximating the incisive papilla can be connected in a detachable manner.

    • A method for characterization of a patient's esophagus may include receiving data measured by an impedance and high resolution manometry catheter in an esophagus in which the data may be representative of a pressure and/or an impedance associated with a swallowing event. The method may also include determining a cross-sectional area of the esophagus based on the received data and a pre-determined amount of a bolus consumed during the swallowing event. Systems and apparatus for characterizing a patient's esophagus may also include measuring data with a high resolution manometry catheter to determine the cross-sectional area, work, and compliance of the esophagus as a function of time during a swallowing event. Averaged data may establish a database of normal values for work done and compliance and allow for comparison of a patient to normal pathology.
