摘要： A tuning system (102) is described that is capable of receiving a number of different broadcast types such as analog (114) or digital satellite (116), cable (110, 112), Internet (118), and terrestrial airwave broadcasts (104, 106, 108). The tuning system (102) stores (210) service records, each service recording containing information required to tune to a particular channel. These service records are categorized within service spaces by tuner type (212, 214, 216, 218, 220, 222, 224 or 226), content, or in any other desired manner. A viewer selects (actively or by default) the service space in which the viewer desires to channel surf. The viewer then selects the desired channel within that service space. In response to this selection, the tuning system (102) uses the information within the selected service record to identify the correct tuner (212, 214, 216, 218, 220, 222, 224 or 226), and to cause that tuner (212, 214, 216, 218, 220, 222, 224 or 226) to tune to the selected channel.

摘要： A database central routing device is provided for routing incoming access requests for internet access among a variety of on-line service providers (1721). The device generally includes a central server (1724) having a list of algorithms pertaining to access phone numbers of internet access providers (1732) to be chosen from. The central routing device further includes an automatic phone number identifier (1728) to identify incoming calls in order to identify the user as a customer. An algorithm generator (1736) is also included in order to download algorithms pertaining to particular phone numbers in order to give the user access to a variety of internet access providers. The central routing device allows the user to select from a number of internet access providers depending on the availability of the providers. Factors such as time of day, consistent peak and off peak hours of any particular provider, the time of access, the type of user such as consumer or business user, and other factors in order to make efficient use of a variety of internet access providers.

A number of hypertext links are identified, wherein each hypertext link is for locating one of a plurality of Web pages. The hypertext links may be identified from a particular Web page or from results of a Web search. Web pages are retrieved using the identified hypertext links. Additional Web pages may be retrieved from Web pages that have been retrieved. Retrieved Web pages are automatically displayed in a sequence on the display device to form a visual tour of certain World Wide Web sites. The sequence may be based on any of various criteria, such as the subject matter of Web pages, the particular distribution of Web pages among Web sites, or the relative popularity of Web sites. A progress indication is displayed to indicate the Web page in the sequence that is currently being displayed.

摘要： Browser software implemented in a set-top box (31) as part of a client system communicating over the Internet with one or more servers allows a user to navigate using a remote control (11) through World-Wide Web pages in which a plurality of hypertext anchors are displayed on a television (12). A user input entered from a remote input device is received by the client system over an infrared (IR) link (54). The user input specifies a direction in which the user wishes to move a selection relative to a currently selected hypertext anchor. Based on the user input, a determination is made of which one of the hypertext anchors is a best selectable hypertext anchor, and that hypertext anchor is then selected (55) and indicated as such to the user. The user interface (56) allows for the selection of hypertext anchors which are part of either client-side or server-side image maps.

摘要： A method and apparatus are disclosed for providing mirrored site administrators (480) with the number of hits from a proxy's document cache (465) and for dispatching document requests in a proxy (410) to more efficiently allocate the document cache space (465) within the proxy (410). A proxy (410) includes a document cache (465) storing recently requested documents, and maintains information regarding requests from the client (1) that are serviced from the proxy's document cache (465) such as the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) of the requested document and the number of cached responses. This information is provided by the proxy (410) to a remote site administrator (480). In this manner, remote site administrators (480) can more accurately track total hits. According to another aspect of the present invention, the proxy (410) implements a dispatching scheme for client requests that results in a more efficient allocation of the proxy's document cache space (465).

The web browser software provides picture adjustment screens which contain instructions on how to adjust the monitor controls to optimize the picture quality. The picture adjustment screens also contain test patterns which provide reference and visual feedback of the monitor adjustment. The user adjusts the picture quality of the monitor using the monitor display controls and the test patterns provided on the picture adjustment screens. Picture adjustment screens are provided for display characteristics such as picture brightness, contrast, sharpness, color, and hue.
