    • The present invention eliminates the halo ring of a solid state laser's output by creating a surface finish of the crystal element (20), which is matte only over part of its surface. The present invention also employs mirrored surfaces (124, 126) applied to the ends of the crystal element. By making the crystal and mirrors part of the same element, the invention eliminates the problems associated with misalignement of the element and the mirrors. Combining the mirrors and crystal in a single element permits nonrigid mounting of the crystal element. Thus, the present invention employs the crystal mirror element mounted by means of an elastomeric material (128, 130). The elastomeric material provides a self-centering action to properly position the element, so as to capture the light energy from the laser excitation source (22) while allowing for movement of the element due to thermal expansion.
