    • The method (M) for detecting the shape and/or dimensions of a wheel (3) on vehicle repair workshop machines or the like comprises the stages of: projection (B 1, B 2 ) of a line of light (6) onto the surface of a portion of a wheel (3) mounted rotating on a vehicle repair workshop machine (1) or the like; acquisition (C 1 , C 2 ) of at least a two-dimensional image (I;) of the projected line of light (6); processing (F) of the acquired image (I j ) to determine the profile (P i ) of the portion of the wheel (3); at least two stages (D 1 , D 2 ) of complete rotation of the wheel (3); and a distributed detection stage (A), wherein the projection stage (B 1 , B 2 ) and acquisition stage (C 1 , C 2 ) are performed in correspondence to first angular positions (α j ) of the wheel (3) during the first rotation stage (D 1 ), and in correspondence to second angular positions (α k ) of the wheel (3) during the second rotation stages (D 2 ), the first angular positions (α j ) and the second angular positions (α k ) being at least partially distinct the one from the other.

    • The balancing machine (1) for balancing vehicle wheels comprises: a base frame (2) supporting gripping and rotation means (3) for gripping and rotating a wheel (R) for vehicles around a balancing axis (A), first sensor means (4) associated with the gripping and rotation means (3) suitable for detecting the unbalance of the wheel (R), an electronic processing and control unit (5) associated with the first sensor means (4) for the calculation of at least a balancing weight to apply onto the wheel (R) to balance the unbalance, and an auxiliary detection appliance (6, 7, 8) associated with the base frame (2) and having: a rolling device (6) suitable for pressing onto the wheel (R), and in turn comprising: a support structure (9, 10) for two rollers (11) revolving around axes parallel to each other, and a flexible member (12) closed on itself in a loop, wrapped around the rollers (11) and having a substantially flat active section (12a), suitable for pressing on the wheel (R) to simulate the rolling thereof on the road, and a return section (12b) substantially opposite the active section (12a), and second sensor means (8) associated with the rolling device (6) and suitable for detecting the behaviour of the wheel (R) when pressed by the rolling device (6).
