    • An overcurrent protection system which will give a rapid response to overcurrents which cause a reduction in the voltage across the load, e.g. a partial or complete short across the load, and is particularly suitable for protecting circuits against relatively small overcurrents. As illustrated in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2, the system comprises: a circuit interruption element (108, 2) which, in the operating circuit, is connected in series between the electrical power supply (102, 12) and the electrical load (112, 8), and which has a closed state which permits the flow of a normal current, INORMAL, through the circuit interruption element, and an open state which permits the flow of at most a reduced current, substantially less then INORMAL, through the circuit interruption element; a control element (104, 6) which, in the operating circuit, is connected in parallel with the load, and which has an on state, when the voltage across the control element is a normal voltage, VNORMAL, and is converted to an off state, when the voltage across the control element falls to a value VFAULT, or less, and is functionaly linked to the circuit interruption element so that when the control element is in the on state, the circuit interruption element is in the closed state, and when the control element is in the off state, the circuit interruption element is in the open state; and a bypass element (106,4) which is connected in parallel with the circuit interruption element, and has a start-up state such that, if the circuit interruption element is in the fault state and a current INORMAL is passed through the bypass element, the voltage across the control element is greater than VFAULT, and a stopped state such that if the circuit interruption element is in the fault state as a result of the voltage across the control element having fallen to a value VFAULT or less, the current through the bypass element is such that the voltage across the control element remains at a value of VFAULT or less.

    • An electrical protection system as illustrated in the figure which can be connected in series between an electrical power supply and an electrical load to form an operating circuit, which, when so connected, protects the circuit from overcurrents. The system comprises: a control element (104) which has a relatively low resistance, RLOW, when a relatively low current, INORMAL, is passing through it, and is converted to a relatively high resistance RFAULT, when the current through it increases from INORMAL to a relatively high current, IFAULT; a circuit interruption (108) element which is connected in series with the control element, has a normal state when the current INORMAL is passing through the control element, the normal state permitting the current INORMAL to pass through the system, and has a fault state which permits the flow of at most a reduced current, substantially less than INORMAL; and a bypass element (106) which is connected in parallel with the series combination of the control element and the circuit interruption element, and is functionally linked to the circuit interruption element so that an increase in current passing through the bypass element can convert the circuit interruption element into the fault state. When the current through the system increases from INORMAL to IFAULT, the resistance of the control element increases from RLOW to RFAULT, an increased current passes through the bypass element, and the circuit interruption element is converted into the fault state.

    • An electrical protection system which can be connected between an electrical power supply (102) and an electrical load (112) to form an operating circuit having a current-carrying line and a return line, and which, when so connected, protects the operating circuit from (A) ground faults and (B) currents or voltages in a selected frequency range, which system comprises: a. a circuit interruption element (108), which can adopt a normal state which permits the flow of a normal current, INORMAL, in the circuit, or a fault state which permits the flow of at most a reduced current, substantially less than INORMAL, in the circuit; b. a comparison element (114), which (1) comprises (a) a line sense component (121) which senses the level of a current, ILINE, in the current-carrying line of the circuit at a line sense point between a line sense input and a line sense output, (b) a return sense component (123) which senses the level of a current, IRETURN, in the return line of the circuit at a return sense point between a return sense input and a return sense output, and (c) optionally, a passthru sense component (125) which senses the level of a current, IPASSTHRU, at a passthru sense point in a passthru line, and (2) determines a net effective current, ICOMPARISON, by comparing the levels of ILINE, IRETURN and IPASSTHRU, and changes the circuit interruption element from its normal state to its fault state if ICOMPARISON increases from a value less than a predetermined current imbalance value, IIMBALANCE, to a value more than IIMBALANCE; and c. a bypass element (106) which has a current through it, IBYPASS, which, (1) when the circuit is subjected to a current above a predetermined current value in a selected frequency range; or (2) when the load is subjected to a voltage above a predetermined voltage value in a selected frequency range; changes and thus causes ICOMPARISON to increase to more than IIMBALANCE, thereby causing the comparison element to change the circuit interruption element from its normal state to its fault state.

    • An overcurrent protection system which will give a rapid response to relatively small overcurrents. In a first aspect, the system can be connected between an electrical power supply (12) and an electrical load (26) to form an operating circuit. When so connected, the system protects the circuit from overcurrents, has a normal operating condition and a fault condition, and comprises: a circuit interruption element (24) having a normal state which permits the flow of a normal current, INORMAL, when the system is in the normal operating condition, and a fault state which permits the flow of at most a reduced current, substantially less than INORMAL, when the system is in the fault condition; and a control element (18), connected in series with the circuit interruption element, the control element having a variable resistance which is low when the current in the system does not exceed the normal current, INORMAL, by a predetermined current amount, and increases by at least a predetermined resistance amount when the current in the system exceeds the normal current, INORMAL, by the predetermined current amount; the circuit interruption element changing from its normal state to its fault state, thereby causing the system to change from its normal operating condition to its fault condition, when the resistance of the control element has increased by the predetermined resistance amount.
