    • Simple and rapid method of calibrating an electronic scale (22) arranged to output an n-bit binary signal as a representation of an item being weighed. The method includes the steps of comparing the bits of a first n-bit binary signal representative of a first weighted condition of the scale (22) with the settings of a first set of n manually settable switches (66a, 66b), and comparing the bits of a second n-bit binary signal representative of a second weighted condition of the scale (22) with the settings of a second set of n manually settable switches (66c, 66d). The settings of the switches (66a, 66b, 66c, 66d) are changed, as necessary, in accordance with instructions displayed on display means (32) so as to bring the settings into conformity with the bits of said first and second binary signals. The invention is also concerned with methods of recalibrating and zero balancing the scale (22).

    • A method of weighing using an electronic scale includes the steps of periodically providing digital values each of which is an instantaneous representation of the weight of an object placed upon a load plate (26), and storing each such digital value in a RAM (64). Successive digital values are compared for similarity within a given tolerance to enable a determination to be made as to when the scale has stabilized following the placing of an object on the load plate (26). The overall range of the scale is divided into various regions based upon frequency of use and reliability of readings. To bring about the display of a weight on a display (32), the fewest consecutive similar digital values are required for that scale region of most frequent use and greatest reliability, thereby minimizing the time required for completing the weighing of objects having weights falling within that region.

    • A method of checking merchandise items utilizes scanning means (36) for scanning coded data on the items for generating data signals identifying the items, and an electronic scale (22) for weighing the items, the price of a scanned item or the weight of a weighed item being displayed on a common display (32). A first indicator (100) is activated when a successful scanning or weighing operation has taken place, and a second indicator (98) is activated when an unsuccessful scanning or weighing operation has taken place. Both of the indicators (100, 98) are maintained in an unactivated condition while a scanning operation is in progress. In order to prevent conflict in use of the common display (32), a weighing operation is initiated when either one of the indicators (100, 98) is activated and a steady representation of the weight of an item is generated by the scale (22).
