    • A centrifugal separator comprises a base (10), a substantially vertical spindle (14) upstanding from the base (10), a rotary vessel (13) mounted on the spindle (14), and a housing (15) which encloses the rotary vessel (13) and is connected to the base (10). A liquid supply duct (29) supplies liquid to be filtered to the rotary vessel (13). The rotary vessel (13) has an open top and comprises filter material extending to a weir (30) at its upper edge. The housing (15) includes a passageway (46) adjacent and communicating with the weir (30) so that in use centrifugal force generated by rotation of the vessel (13) causes waste material which does not pass through the filter material to progress upwardly over the inner surface of the vessel (13) and be expelled over the weir (30), thereafter discharged from the housing. The liquid to be filtered may be supplied to the bottom of the rotary vessel (13) via an axial bore (20) in the spindle (14) or it may be supplied to the open top of the rotary vessel (13). The separator may be self-powered by discharge of liquid via nozzles (22) from the axial bore (20).

    • A centrifugal separator comprises a stationary casing (10) defining an enclosure, and a rotor (12) which is rotatably mounted in the enclosure and has a drum body (20) with separable base (18) and cover (22) as end closures. A removable liner (30) of resilient material, preferably elastomeric material, such as rubber, is provided inside the drum body (20) and is formed in one piece with at least one of the respective annular sealing elements (32, 34) which are arranged between the body (20) and the base (18), on the one hand, and between the body (20) and the cover (22) on the other hand. This streamlines periodic cleaning of the liner (30) and seals (32, 34) and reduces risk of failures in the servicing operation which can adversely affect performance of the separator.

    • (Figure 2) A stationary casing (11) defines an enclosure and a rotor (20), namely a filter housing, is rotatably mounted in the enclosure, the rotor (20) having a lid or cover (24) to permit cleaning of its interior. An electrical rotation sensor is provided as a first electric coil (51) mounted to the rotor and a second electric coil (41) mounted to the casing (11) and connectable to a power source (43). Voltage sensing means, such as processor (42) associated with the second coil (41), detects voltage oscillation induced in the second coil upon rotation of the rotor and this can be used to calculate and display rotor speed. The first coil (51) is connected in a circuit which includes electrodes (53, 54) exposed to the interior of the rotor (20) at a predetermined position, preferably penetrating the cover (24). The voltage across the second coil (41) changes when those electrodes are contacted by accumulated material in the interior of the rotor and this change is detected to provide an indication that cleaning of the rotor is required. A permanent magnet (60) is mounted to the rotor (20) whereby the battery (43) is automatically charged via the stator coil (41) upon rotation of the rotor (20).

    • A self-powered centrifugal separator comprises a base (10), a rotor (11) mounted on an operably substantially vertical axis (12) for rotation thereabout by reaction to fluid emission from nozzles in the base, a housing (13) mounted on the base and enclosing the rotor, a sump (14) formed in the base (10) below the rotor (11), a fluid passageway (16) through the base extending from an inlet port (17) to an outlet port (18) and including a diversion port (19) to supply fluid to the interior of the rotor (11) by way of the rotation axis (12), and a drain passage (15) in the base for draining fluid from the sump (14) to the fluid passageway (16). A spring loaded valve body (30) is provided in the fluid passageway (16) and is configured and arranged to shut off supply of fluid to the interior of the rotor (11) when pressure of fluid entering the inlet port (17) falls below a predetermined minimum pressure value so that an engine to which the fluid is supplied as lubricating fluid is not at risk of damage. The valve body (30) is also configured and arranged (at 38, 39) to restrict and/or shut off supply of fluid to the interior of the rotor (11 ) when pressure of fluid entering the inlet port (17) rises above a second predetermined pressure value so that the rotor speed cannot be increased so much that there is risk of damage to the separator itself. Furthermore, a Venturi arrangement is provided in the fluid passageway (16) to develop suction pressure to draw fluid from the drainage passage into the fluid passageway and said Venturi arrangement (40) is conveniently provided integrally with the valve body (30). A non-return formation (50) to prevent back flow of fluid from the outlet port (18) may also be advantageously provided as part of the valve body (30).
