    • This invention relates to an encapsulated optoelectronic circuit which is operable at wavelengths above 1200 nm, preferably in the band 1200 - 1600 nm. As well as the optoelectronic component which operates in the specified waveband the encapsulated device contains full electrical circuitry to drive the optoelectronic component. The invention includes receiver circuits in which the optoelectronic component receives an optical signal, e.g. from a fibre waveguide and electronic circuitry drives the optical receiver, demodulates and provides the data in an electrical form at one of its outputs. The invention includes the alternative case in which the optoelectronic component is an optical signal generator, e.g. an LED or a laser, and the electrical circuitry drives and modulates the optical generator. In this case the data is received from an external terminal. The various components are mounted on a conductive skelton which provides both electrical connections and partial mechanical support. The encapsulation provides the other mechanical support as well as environmental protection. The encapsulation may include a lens surface which assists in optical coupling. It is possible to adjust resistors, e.g. by evaporative heating, after encapsulation whereby operation parameters of the device can be adjusted at a very late stage.

    • An optical connector is provided which requires less accurate machining during manufacture, can reduce the number and/or complexity of component parts required and can achieve a standard industrial product which nevertheless maintains very stable connections. In a receptacle (2) for the optical connector, an alignment sleeve (13) aligns and optically connects an optical fibre unit (18) to another optical fibre unit or to an input/output window of other optical elements in a housing (16). The housing (3) of the receptacle (2) holds the sleeve (13) in an alignment and is comprised of a plurality of housing halves (3a and 3b, 31 and 31b) joined along a major plane extending through the axis of the sleeve (13). The housing halves may include mating surfaces, projections or indents offset from said major plane.

    • An optical connector is provided which can achieve an accurate alignment between an optical ferrule and an optical device in spite of a variation in dimension of the optical ferrule. A split sleeve (13a) has an elastic deformation characteristic and has its fixed end portion inserted into a cylindrical tube (14) on a receptacle (2) side and fixed there. The split sleeve (13a) has an inner diameter made somewhat smaller than the outer diameter of the ferrule (18). During a time period in which the ferrule (18) is inserted in the split sleeve (13a), the ferrule (18) is aligned with an active device (5) with the ferrule (18) elastically gripped by the split sleeve (13a). With the fixed end portion of the split sleeve (13a) fixed in the cylindrical tube (14) a force for returning the split sleeve (13a) back to its original inner diameter acts upon the fixed endportion of the split sleeve (13a), thereby suppressing a loss in the elastic deformation characteristic of the split sleeve (13a) resulting from a passage of time in use.
