    • A rotation actuated core orientation system (10) for a ground drill comprises an orientator (14) and rotation sensitive actuator (16). The actuator (16) is a dispersed system comprising two major components or subsystems namely a centrifugal mechanism (16a) and a time delay mechanism 16b between which is located the bottom orientator (14). The orientator (14) has an active state where the orientator provides a substantially instantaneous indication of a position of a known bearing or reference location in or of the hole, and a locked state where the orientator maintains the indication. The rotation sensitive actuator (16) isoperatively associated with the orientator (14) to actuate the orientator (14) to enter the active state or the locked state dependant on rotational speed of the ground drill.

    • A spearhead assembly (10) comprises a base (12) provided with a slot (14) at one end (16) which opens onto an outer surface (13) of the base (12). A spearpoint positioning system (30) urges the spearpoint (24) toward one of three annually spaced positioned. Moving the spearpoint from one position to another requires the application of an external force.

    • An overshot (10) comprises a latching mechanism (12) for latching a member such as a spear point (14); and, an actuator (16) which actuates the latching mechanism (12). The latching mechanism (12) has a number of different operational states. One of these is a neutral state in which latching mechanism (12) is able to latch or capture a spear point (14). In the neutral state, latching mechanism (12) is able to open in order to receive spear point (14) and then self- close to latch or retain the spear point (14). Latching mechanism (12) also has a locked state in which it is locked in a closed position by actuator (16) to prevent the release of a latched spear point (14). The third state is the release state where the overshot is locked in an open position by actuator (16) to release a previously latched spear point (14). The actuator (16) operates as a linear to rotary motion converter which converts linear motion of one part of the actuator to a rotary motion of another part of the actuator between a plurality of rotationally spaced positions. The rotational positions determine the state of the latching mechanism.

    • A core orientation system (10) comprises an electronic orientation device (12) that connects to a back end (14) of a core tube (16), a core position indicator (CPI) 18 adapted for engagement with the core tube (16) when on the ground, and a remote control unit 22 that communicates between the device (12) and the CPI (18). The device (12) electronically logs orientation data of a reference point R on the core tube 16 relative to a first datum A at a time when a core sample (24) contained in the core tube (16) is in an insitu orientation. Once the core tube is retrieved and placed in a stable position the device (12) again logs orientation data of the reference point R to a second datum B. A rotational displacement θ from the first datum A to the second datum B is calculated and transferred to the CPI (18) which is then moved about the core tube (16). When the CPI (18) is moved to a position where it is rotated by θ from the second datum B, it emits a signal to indicate the position of the first datum A.

The spear point (18) can pivot about axis (26) between two positions that are angularly spaced by 180°. The guard (20) is coupled to the proximal end of the spear point (18) and configured to at least partially occupy the opening (22) when the spear point is in a location at or between the two spaced apart positions. The guard (20) acts to minimise the risk of an operator's hand or glove worn by the operator from being pinched or caught in the slot (16) between the spear point (18) and base (12) as the spear point (18) is pivoted between the two positions.
